Orem City to Attempt to Break 24-Hour Swimming Record...And You Can Help

Orem City is going to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for a 24-hour swimming relay during their SummerFest celebration this year.  The current record is 3,941 people and was set on January 23-24, 2009 in Tshwane, South Africa.  You can sign up to participate in the attempt by visiting their website.

From the SummerFest website:

We want to break a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ™ and hope that you will be able to help us! During Orem Summerfest on June 11 and 12, we will be attempting to break the 24 hour swimming relay record! What does that mean? Well, we want to get the most participants to swim one length of a pool in a 24 hour period. The current record is 3,941 people and was set on January 23-24, 2009 in Tshwane, South Africa.

In order to do this, we need to have a swimmer complete one length in an average of 20 seconds. That's pretty fast! We need to recruit over 4,000 confident swimmers who have always dreamt of breaking a world record and seeing their efforts recognized in one of the most read books in the world!

It sounds simple, but we need your help. Getting that many good swimmers willing to participate and show up when expected is going to be tough. If you want to help us do this, we need you to sign up…and get your friends to sign up!

We hope you will be able to help us. We need a lot of people!

Man it would be nice if people who organize events like this would do their homework. That's the same weekend as the Boise Half Ironman. I suspect at least a third of those participants could do 25 yards less than 20 seconds.

If they scheduled it on another weekend, I'd be in. Too bad. I'd be surprised if they could get that many people. We don't even get more than 200 people at a Utah Masters Swim meet. That's alot of high schoolers to make up the difference. I wish them luck, but I don't think there are that many fast swimmers in Utah.

I would totally do it too, but it's the same weekend as Utah Summer Games. I didn't know the Boise Half was that same weekend too.
