Improving Utah Open Water for 2012

I've been thinking about some ways to make Utah Open Water better for 2012.  Here are some of the ideas I have come up with.  Let me know what you think.

More Organized Group Swims
Maybe we could pick one aspect of open water swimming (sighting, start, finish, drafting, etc) each week and do some related drills to improve our skills.  It would be great to have more organized workouts instead of just "swim a lap around the lake".  I also think it would be fun to occasionally do timed, friendly races to check our progress throughout the season.

I love doing clinics!  It's a lot of fun for me to share my love of the sport and meet new people.  Last year, Gords and I did four clinics and I would like to do that many (or more) again next year.  I also though it might be a good idea to have a clinic for paddlers who will be supporting swimmers at Deer Creek or other events.

Swimmer Profiles
I talked about doing this a while ago, but got busy with work, family, etc.  I have met so many cool people through swimming this year and want you to meet them too.  The idea is to send out short questionnaires to some of these people and then post their answers here.

Lake / Reservoir / River / Pond Profiles
I thought it would be a good idea to post short profiles of good places to swim around the state.  The profiles would include things like: water temperature, suggested swimming routes, entrance fees, nearby places to eat, etc.

What ideas do you have?  What would you like to see here in 2012?

Yes to all the ideas. I was thinking it might be fun to do a weekend trip to Lake Powell with a bunch of ow swimmers in July. I'd love to fill up my summer with swims! I also want to do more swimfests. I like meeting on a weekly basis to just have fun and relax. Remember that swimming/exercising is supposed to be fun.

Yeah it would be really fun to take a weekend trip. I'm not sure what my schedule will be like in July, but I'd be up for doing that.

We definitely need to have more Swimfests. I think one for the major holidays is a good idea.

Before I read Rachel's comment, I thought, 'hey we should do a fun open water swim together!' I would be down for a weekly hang out too...next time i need to swim, not just eat ;)

i've been thinking of how cool it would be to expand the open water swimming in utah. What if we did a bbq this summer and invited some masters swim ppl/flyered up different gyms and had a q&a about open water swimming or had some stuff out? We could invite ppl to an relaxed open water swim together, maybe have a kayaker for the newbs...

I love the idea of clinics and online open water profiles. I'm still looking for good places to swim in the south end of Salt Lake Valley.

Michelle, that sounds like a great idea!

Unknown, the south end of Salt Lake Valley is pretty limited on good places to swim outside. Pretty much the only option is Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman. Other than that you would have to come up to the Great Salt Lake or go down to Utah Lake.
