This afternoon I met Jim out at the Great Salt Lake Marina for a swim. I was curious where the water temp would be with our recent warm weather. I was guessing it would be in the upper 60's and was surprised when I looked at my thermometer and it said 76 degrees!
Jim was already in the water so I hurried and got greased up using the grease I mixed up and put in a deodorant stick. It worked pretty well, but need some tweaking.
Since Jim was already in the water and no one else was there to swim, I decided to swim hard to the end of the red buoys and back. I thought this was about a mile. There was a bit of wind and I was swimming against it on the way out. I saw Jim waiving at me out of the corner of my eye as I passed him.
The water was warm the whole way. I thought maybe it would be a bit cooler outside of the marina, but it wasn't. It was a bit too warm for my liking and I would have liked it better if it was around 68 to 72. That's my sweet spot.
On the way back, the wind was pushing me a little bit. I felt faster on the way back than on the way out.
I caught up with Jim in the parking lot. His thermometer also read 76. Hopefully it's not that warm for the Great Salt Lake race next week.
When I got home and looked at my GPS, I had actually gone a bit further than I though and ended up around 1.3 miles in 33 minutes. A bit slower than I was hoping for, but I think swimming against the wind slowed me down.
Tomorrow is a free open water clinic at the Great Salt Lake Marina at 4pm. I won't be able to make it, but the SLOW crew will be there. It's a great opportunity to preview the 1-mile Great Salt Lake course before the race next week.
